Are sequels no longer a success formula?
Most of the films released this year have failed to revive the magic of their prequels

Many filmmakers want to cash in on the success of their film by making a sequel to it. The most recent example being Baaghi. As soon as the Tiger Shroff-Shraddha Kapoor starrer became a hit, the makers announced Baaghi 2. Other sequels in the pipeline are Housefull 3, Raaz Reboot, Rock On!! 2 and Kahaani 2.
But take a closer look and you’ll see that of late, they haven’t been doing well at the box-office. We did a quick round-up of the sequels released in 2016 so far. Take a look.
Ghayal Once Again

Sunny Deol’s Ghayal was a big hit upon its release in 1990, with the actor even earning a National Award for his performance. But when Sunny came back with its sequel 26 years later, the reaction was tepid. The film couldn’t recreate the Ghayal magic.
Jai GangaaJal

Ajay Devgn’s 2003 film GangaaJal hadn’t opened to massive box-office numbers, but went on to become a much-acclaimed film. So the expectations were sky high when Priyanka Chopra stepped into Ajay’s shoes for Jai GangaaJal. Sadly, the movie opened to unimpressive numbers. Worse, it didn’t even win favour from critics.
Tere Bin Laden: Dead Or Alive

Tere Bin Laden, which marked the Bollywood debut of Ali Zafar, was one of the best satires to have been made in recent years. But director Abhishek Sharma couldn’t keep the momentum going with the 2016 sequel. Even Manish Paul, who is known for his comic timing, couldn’t salvage this movie.
Kyaa Kool Hai Hum 3

Agreed, Kyaa Kool Hai Hum was one of the pioneers of sex comedy in Bollywood. But haven’t we had enough of the crude jokes and double meaning dialogues? You don’t have to unleash the same thing again – read Kyaa Super Kool Hai Hum (2012) and Kyaa Kool Hai Hum 3 (2016). Neither of the movies worked at the box-office. However, the makers aren’t ready to give up – they have already started working on the next in the series.
Teraa Surroor

When Himesh Reshammiya’s Aap Kaa Surroor couldn’t make waves at the box-office, we assumed the music composer-turned-actor would have got the hint. But we were wrong. Himesh came back with Teraa Surroor, sequel to the 2007 flick. Needless to say, it didn’t set the cash registers ringing.
1920 London

Vikram Bhatt’s fascination with horror films continues. 1920 is one such series. The first film, 1920 (2008) and its sequel 1920: Evil Returns (2012) earned brickbats from critics, but that didn’t deter him from making 1920 London. Considering the Sharman Joshi starrer sank without a trace, can we presume that this is the end of 1920 franchise?
